e-me-ri-ca

hi.
if anyone's wondering, here are a few of the many many events that has happened this past few weeks.

1. internationals. so i'm here to find out that i'm one of the only freshmen international dude. frankly, having another korean freshmen dude was something that i was looking forward to, and i'm a little disappointed. not because i hate being around women (remember, we had 8 girls and 4 guys in our class), but it's just that i've really looked forward to finding a friend with more similarities than differences. on the bright side though, all the korean freshmen girls are crazy fun to be around. it's been a pleasure getting to know them.

2. job. and i believe it's one of the easier jobs on campus. oh. and i work 19 hours a week - a lot for a freshmen. it's quite amazing that i made it because i called for an interview about 5 minutes before the deadline for appointments.

3. dunn hall 4th floor - this is where i live. and i am so happy to be here. i'm the only asian guy here. unsurprisingly. but anyways. the RA's are really respectable guys, and so are the people here. it's so surprising to see so many talented people around me. many of the people on my floor are very good musicians, and by good - i mean real good. dunn hall has had a floor-against-floor olympic. it was a blast. although i didn't was clueless about most of the competitions. oh. and my roommate. his name is houston. and he reminds me of kohl herman once in a while. he's messy, which is soooo great that i don't have to be stressed about cleaning up too much.

4.  salatiga. - i'm still adjusting out of the life i had in salatiga. i swear that there is not a single hour that i don't think about being back there. i've began realizing that the people around me formed who i was a lot more than i knew. and it's quite hard realizing that now. i miss my champagne colored avanza, going to the same cafe 5 times a week with friends, the sunrises at neo, yearbook class, chapel class, and so many other things. i still feel like a stranger here, and i'm nowhere close to NOT being a stranger right now. i miss the josh that i had to leave back at salatiga. quite honestly though, i don't really miss the school itself yet. don't tell aunt lisa.

why i chose al jazeera

as the news of osama bin laden's death hit the press,
people in america gathered together.
to celebrate the death of osama bin laden.
differences somehow magically dissipated
ironically, unified by: death.

al jazeera reported, and so did cnn.
yet, cnn reported the celebration.
al jazeera reported the situation.

i see something horrible in this.
not because i support any of al qaeda's actions
nor because i find that this action is unjust.
but the fact that someone is celebrating death.

i have always learned to hate the sin not the sinner.
a life is a life, no matter how horrible the person's action was.
cnn failed me in that.
they celebrated death, hated the sinner.

al jazeera never condoned obl's actions,
but they haven't lost objectivity.
they did not celebrate death.
instead, they celebrated justice.

"celebrate justice, not a loss of life"

rant rant rant

why my D80 is freaking amazing

1. it's freaking cheap (secondhand anyways)
2. it takes AF-d lenses (no need for expensive af-s)
3. two control dials
4. has CLS (probably the cheapest camera with CLS)
5. last of nikon's CCD sensors
6. lightweight enough to carry, heavy enough to stabilize
7. perfect batteries
8. big viewfinder (compared to those crummy entry canons)
9. 10MP's (small raw files)
10. it's a nikon (don't comment on this one)

why i'm liberal. (political)

lib·er·al
lɪbərəl, ˈlɪbrəl/ lib-er-uhl, lib-ruhl]favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.

during this past year, i have strangely found a new stance on how i see the world.
liberalism.
being in a small, and (mostly) conservative school,
my liberal approach on the political spectrum was (and still is) a strange one.
i do believe that a political opinion is an ever-changing part of life,
and there are definitely no guarantees that i will always stay the same.

being liberal is usually defined by following the democratic party.
and the democratic party is a taboo amongst some conservatives,
for supporting the gay rights and abortion.
and those issues, are unacceptable.
being a liberal means, you have to ignore the long accepted traditions for reforms.
face the criticisms of those who follow those traditions.

so why?
why am i a liberal?

living amongst a blend of korean, indonesian, and american cultures,
i have realized that change is never bad.
and is something you will have to live with.
all ideas of change
must be examined by somebody
in order for change to happen.

and unfortunate to say,
changes, not traditions, create the future.

it is the liberals' job to support those changes,
and lead the pathways for the future.

i do not want to see a future, that is not without change.
if what the future holds, has not changed from what the past holds,
it isn't the future.

i am a liberal.
for i am anxiously excited for the ideas that one day will create the future.
